About Us

A historic inn, preserved for the future.

The Heart of Dumbleyung for Generations

For more than a century, the Dumbleyung Inn has stood at the heart of town—a place where locals gather, travellers pause, and stories are shared over good food and a friendly drink. From family celebrations to everyday catch‑ups, the Inn has long been part of the rhythm of community life.

Today, the Inn is managed locally and supported by a team committed to restoring its role as a welcoming, family‑friendly hub for everyone in Dumbleyung. With a renewed focus on community connection, quality meals, and genuine country hospitality, the Inn is once again becoming a place where people feel proud to meet, celebrate, and work.

Just down the road lies one of our region’s greatest icons—Lake Dumbleyung, where Donald Campbell set the world water speed record in 1964 aboard the legendary Bluebird. The spirit of that moment—courage, ambition, and local pride—still echoes through the community, and the Inn is proud to be part of the story that brings visitors and locals together.

Whether you’re marking a birthday, hosting a get‑together, catching up with friends, or welcoming visitors to the Wheatbelt, the Dumbleyung Inn is your place to gather, connect, and enjoy.

Proudly local. Proudly part of the community

The Dumbleyung Inn has been part of the town’s fabric for over a century. After years of decline, we’re proud to be restoring it, investing in local jobs, supporting local suppliers, and creating a welcoming community hub for everyone.

Early Days – A District Showplace

Originally known as AJ Tunney’s Hotel, the Dumbleyung Inn was officially opened on the 21st of December 1911. Its establishment marked a significant milestone for the growing district, quickly earning a reputation as one of the region’s finest country hotels.

Three years prior to its opening, an application had been heard at the Wagin Licensing Court for a hotel to be built at Nippering, however those plans did not proceed. The successful applicants for what would become the Dumbleyung Hotel were Mr and Mrs Tunney, respected hoteliers who already held a statewide reputation for excellence in hospitality.

Their new venture was considered a showpiece for the district. The hotel featured twenty-four bedrooms, two classes of dining room, two sitting rooms, and a substantial 40,000 gallon water tank — an impressive inclusion for the era. Stabling facilities were also provided, with accommodation for seventeen stalls and three loose boxes, reflecting the important role horses played in regional travel and trade at the time.

For generations, the Inn has stood at the heart of Dumbleyung — welcoming locals, travellers, workers and visitors alike.

If you are working in the district or just passing through, our accommodation is available for short and long stays.

Today, the story continues. In 2025, the Dumbleyung Inn entered a new chapter under the ownership of Ada and James O’Connor. With a deep respect for the building’s history and a strong commitment to the local community, they are restoring and revitalising the Inn — honouring its heritage while bringing fresh energy and renewed country hospitality to this historic landmark.
